Following Their Voices focuses on enhancing relationships between students and teachers, creating structures and supports for teachers and school administrators to co-construct teaching and learning interactions with students and creating safe, well-managed learning environments. Following Their Voices is based on research that was conducted with First Nations and M\u00e9tis engaged and non-engaged students, parents\/caregivers, teachers and school administrators about what is needed in order to be successful as a First Nations or M\u00e9tis student in school. The \u2018voices\u2019 of these groups of people were profound in terms of the issues they identified. Their words and insights, along with international research, and guidance and advice from Elders and Knowledge Keepers formed the foundation of this initiative.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">For an overview of the initiative please see\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.followingtheirvoices.ca\/doc\/Dev_Journey_Public_Version_19-01-17.pdf\">Following Their Voices \u2013 A Developmental Journey<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"container large-container\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div id=\"a-main-content\" class=\"column c-two-third\">\n<section class=\"general-content\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.saskatchewan.ca\/-\/media\/images\/government-relations\/partnerships-for-success\/cob-following-their-voices.jpg?h=258&amp;la=en&amp;w=333&amp;hash=720B35F3E0F363B187A7512FE62D6263\" alt=\"A box quote describing outcomes of the Ministry of Education's Following Their Voices program. \" width=\"333\" height=\"258\" \/><\/section>\n<section class=\"general-content\">The initiative is based on research conducted with a group of Saskatchewan First Nations and M\u00e9tis students, their parents, their teachers and in-school administrators. This group of people indicated strong relationships, well-managed learning environments and engaging interactions between teachers and students are important to increasing students\u2019 ability to achieve success. Ongoing engagement, advice and guidance from a broad representation of Saskatchewan First Nations and M\u00e9tis Elders and Knowledge Keepers representing all the Indigenous language groups in the province is critical to the initiative.\u00a0 FTV has been successful in improving Indigenous student engagement and achievement. Over the last school year, engagement measures related to student-teacher relations are at or above provincial averages.\u00a0 A total of 12 First Nation schools participated in implementing Following Their Voices in 2018-19.\u00a0 Since 2014-15, Following Their Voices has expanded to include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>46 schools;<\/li>\n<li>1282 school staff members; and<\/li>\n<li>69,992 participating students<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pa.srsd119.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/FTV-school-participants.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5192\" src=\"https:\/\/pa.srsd119.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/FTV-school-participants-300x216.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"216\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pa.srsd119.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/FTV-school-participants-300x216.png 300w, https:\/\/pa.srsd119.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/FTV-school-participants.png 496w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/pa.srsd119.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/FTV-schools.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5193\" src=\"https:\/\/pa.srsd119.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/FTV-schools-300x215.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"215\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pa.srsd119.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/FTV-schools-300x215.png 300w, https:\/\/pa.srsd119.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/FTV-schools.png 496w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<\/section>\n<h2><strong>What does the Following Their Voices logo represent?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.followingtheirvoices.ca\/api\/v1\/public\/images\/585693cf-4a3f-40af-92b4-7452dc3749c5\" width=\"136\" height=\"138\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;\">The logo respects the continuous, cyclical nature of life as seen in First Nations, M\u00e9tis and Inuit worldviews. Traditional plants represent spirituality and ceremony. Tobacco, sweet grass, sage and cedar are included in how we, as Indigenous people, pray, what we heal with, how we ask for strength and when we give thanks. The Nations of our people are represented by flowers, an Inukshuk and a sash, in addition to the plants. A common connection and design element in our beadwork is the five petal flower.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;\">There are significant symbols that have deep meaning in the center of the logo. We are connected to the Earth, as shown by the\u00a0tree and its roots. The tree also represents family.\u00a0The roots represent\u00a0togetherness. The tree is flexible, cleans the air and renews itself. Mother Earth provides everything for us to live and thrive, including giving spiritual guidance and providing useful gifts.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;\">The tree branches, leaves and eagle feathers exemplify the many roads and choices we make in life. In Following Their\u00a0Voices, students will have real choice for their future. The feathers represent spirituality, the Thunderbird (eagle) and future success. Eagle feathers are sacred because the eagle takes our prayers to the Creator. The eagle feather also symbolizes freedom of choice, educational growth and the teachings of the feather. An eagle is free to soar and fly anywhere it chooses, just as our students will be able to soar and have the freedom to do anything they choose.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;\">The family groupings embody the importance of our families who instill knowledge and wisdom. They are our purpose and our home is the core of our being. Our lives carry on through the lives of our children and grandchildren. Family here represents the mixed cultures of our Nations. Children are a gift from the Creator to be nurtured by the family and community.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;\">The earth elements of air, water, earth and fire make us unique as Indigenous people. The elements represent spirituality and these are symbols of creation from Mother Earth. Yellow, green and blue embody the Treaties, \u201cAs long as the sun shines, the grass grows and the waters flow\u201d. Blue and white represent the infinity symbol and flag of the M\u00e9tis.
